Need vertical splits in screen?

Get the actual source of screen:

wget http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/screen/screen-4.0.3.tar.gz

Then get the patch from http://fungi.yuggoth.org/vsp4s/:

wget http://vsp4sdl.yuggoth.org/wrp_vertical_split_0.3_4.0.2.diff.bz2

Extract the downloads:

tar xvf screen-4.0.3.tar.gz
bunzip2 wrp_vertical_split_0.3_4.0.2.diff.bz2

Then apply the patch:

patch -p1 < wrp_vertical_split_0.3_4.0.2.diff

Compile and build screen from scratch:

./configure
make
make install

And to finish it add following line to the ~/.sceenrc config:

bind 'V' vert_split

To create a vertical split press 'C-a V'

Done and have fun with it!

If you want to scroll in the alternative text buffer of screen in xterm just add

termcapinfo xterm ti@:te@

to your .screenrc config file.

[Example with eth0]

ifconfig eth0:1 10.0.0.1

This line add a secound network interface for 10.0.0.0 to your nic. The rest of the preferences are automatic made. So if you don't need special preferences like gateway and co. there is nothing more to do.

You can check it with route -n if it worked...

[Basic]
# One server, two clients (IP unknown)
# Forwarding port from server to client

(IPs of clients change regularly and aren't known, between client A and B are Firewalls, which don't allow connections from outside)
Client A is allowed to connect to the server, but not to client B.
Client B is allowed to connect to the server, but not to client A.

[Solution]
Client B makes a connection to the server to forward a remote port to the local host and hold this connection all the time (cron-script).
Client A makes a connection to the remote port on the server and will be forwarded to the client B.

[Why?]
I use this to forward a SSH connection from work home, or the other way around.

[Example with SSH]
The SSH daemon runs also on both clients and on the server.
So I forward a port from the server to my clients ssh port.

Skype Plugin for Pidgin

This is a Skype Plugin for Pidgin/libpurple/Adium. It lets you view and chat with all your Skype buddies from within Pidgin/Adium. You still need Skype to be running to be able to use it, but it lets you keep a consistent user interface and use all the other nifty Pidgin/Adium plugins with it, like spell-checking or OTR encryption.

I have some troubles with it, but for my needs it's perfect. There are still some contacts left so I didn't wont to delete Skype. With this I just can text them, but no direct calls. Skype still have to run in the background, but who cares!

For installation is the same like the Facebook plugin:

To install, run the deb package or copy libskype.so to the plugins directory, normally /usr/lib/purple-2/ or ~/.purple/plugins

Winamp Presets for Audacious

Many users of Linux miss the equalizer presets that they had on Windoze applications such as WinAmp. The following terminal scripts will install the WinAmp equalizer presets for Audacious.

To download the WinAmp presets type:

wget http://www.xmms.org/misc/winamp_presets.gz

To install the presets for the Audacious media player type:

gunzip -c winamp_presets.gz > ~/.config/audacious/eq.preset

You can also install these presets for other linux media players that have equalizers such as xmms and BMP media player.

To install the presets for xmms type:

gunzip -c winamp_presets.gz > ~/.xmms/eq.preset

to install the presets for BMP media player type:

gunzip -c winamp_presets.gz > ~/.bmp/eq.preset

This is a Facebook chat plugin for Pidgin and libpurple messengers. It connects to the new Facebook Chat IM service without the need for an API key.

Currently the plugin can log into the Facebook servers, grab the buddy list, send/receive messages, add/remove friends, receive notifications, search for Facebook friends and set your Facebook status.

It's just a great tool!
I'm using it and I really like it. No problems at all. Just great!

Copy one of the .so files to either /usr/lib/purple-2/ (for 32-bit Linux), /usr/lib64/purple-2/ (for 64-bit Linux), /usr/lib/pidgin/ (for Nokia/Maemo) or ~/.purple/plugins/ (if you dont have root access) and restart Pidgin

I copied it into ~/.purple, so it can't get lost...
